The Statue of Liberty that breaks the shackles of Tyranny and enlightens the World dates back to 1897. Dedicated to General Garibaldi and the Thousand in memory of the battle fought on 20 July 1860, it is a modest work by Francesco Greco from Milazzo. However, the representation is enriched in the pedestal by successful bronze bas-reliefs depicting the episodes of the Battle of Milazzo and the Hero's Rest in S. Maria Maggiore. It is also happily placed at the edge of the tree-lined gallery of the marina, once a place for elegant strolling, and in front of the stately palaces that gave an important aspect to the city's seafront.
