The Fort of the Judges

Going up from Piazza Roma towards the Borgo, on the left side of via Giuseppe Impallomeni, before the Municipal Kindergarten, you will find the west wing of the Quartiere degli Spagnoli, at whose end is attached the Forte Giudici.
Military construction of the seventeenth century, is located at about 14 meters above sea level, consisting of walls in the form of cusps, arranged radially around the main tower, extreme flap of this wing of the military district. It was, together with the Quarter and the Fort of San Gennaro in the Levant, the defensive system of access to the Village and Castle.
Il Piaggia writes that the work was carried out under the government of Cardinal Francesco Del Giudice, from which the fort takes its name; in any case, it is subsequent to the construction of the Quarter itself.
During the 20th century, it underwent various modifications and re-uses, not least as a shed for the city’s fire service. Today it is, together with its context, in a state of complete abandonment.
