Fort Saint Joseph

The fort of San Giuseppe is, of the many fortifications that protected the city, the only one left outside the citadel (besides the Spanish Quarter and the fort Giudici). To reach it you must pass the village of Borgo, in the direction of the Cape, and then turn right into via Sant’Elmo, once via Corrie. After a hundred meters, on the right, among the olive trees and cypresses, you can see the ancient walls that, going down from the castle, converge to the north, in a semi-circular building. Located about 70 meters above sea level, the fort consists of a semi-circular tower about 12 meters high, made with stones joined by hydraulic Malta, while at the base of the semicircle are visible, squared sandstone reinforced. In the upper part, five positions for gunboats. It was built in 1647, to strengthen the pre-existing northern walls from possible attacks coming from the promontory. The name comes from the location, very close to the church of San Giuseppe (1565). The fort currently used by private individuals is not accessible.
